Joan Florence Sinclair
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 10:09 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am wondering if anyone can help me trace one of my relatives. I am trying to find Joan Florence Sinclair who was born in Ipswich England 14 April 1918. She married John Liddell Munn in Portsmouth 17th June 1939. Unfortunately the marriage ended in divorce. Joan had a daughter who was born 1st October 1945 in Norwich England.
Joan and her daughter travelled to New York and arrived at La Guardia Airport on 12th November 1947. They were both listed on the passenger manifest with the surname of Munn.Their intended destination was Hillsdale New York. I know that Joan was in Great Barrington Massachusetts on 31 May 1948. After this time I can not find any trace of either Joan or her daughter.
I would particularly like to find out what happened to her daughter as I have some very exciting news for her.
I would be most grateful for any help anyone can give me.

Nick

Hi Nick,

It is against the rules of RootsChat for us to post information relating to living people.  The daughter was born 1945 and will probably be still living so you need to remove her name or a moderator will do it for you.

You could try :-

No problem - The SSDI shows 7 deaths for someone called Joan with the same birth date that you quoted. Each would need checked out to see if it is the person you are seeking. Nothing for anyone in Massachusetts that I could see.

Looks like this lady - Joan M. Dryer - 14 Apr 1918 26 Nov 1993 - 44072 Novelty, Geauga, Ohio.    was born  in Cleveland Ohio.

Joan Benham - 14 April 1918 - 4 Feb 2015 Bradenton Florida - seems to have the middle initial "S" - which would discount her.

Joan W. Marshall  - 14 Apr 1918  - 1 Mar 2005  - 99688 Willow, Matanuska Susitna, Alaska - seems to have middle initial "W" = Winifred -  which would discount her. Born in Farnborough. England.

Joan T. Bennett  - 14 Apr 1918 23 Feb 2009 - 28562 New Bern, Craven, North Carolina seems to have middle initial "T" - which would discount her. Born Belvidere, Illinois.

Joan Daniel  - 14 Apr 1918 May 1994 - 06473 North Haven, New Haven, Connecticut - seems to have the initial "C" - which would discount her.

Joan M. Dryer - 14 Apr 1918 26 Nov 1993 - 44072 Novelty, Geauga, Ohio - seems to have middle initial "M" = Malcom - which discounts her.

The S could be for Sinclair.

I can't see the whole obit, but this gives a different death date and says she was born in the UK - http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/bradenton/obituary-preview.aspx?n=joan-s-benham&pid=159049898&referrer=136

There is a real estate transaction after that Joan's death that seems to fit with your Joan's daughter's first name:  http://www.bradenton.com/2012/12/16/4318265/real-estate-transactions-for-dec.html  An index that covers the obituary I mentioned above has a reference to the same two women's names that are in this real estate transaction.

There are entries in the US Public reccords database (which can be found on www.familysearch.org) that fit the daughter's name with the surname mentioned in the real estate transaction article and the birth date you mentioned in your first post.

Here's the full obit:

Bradenton Herald, The (FL) - Friday, August 10, 2012

Joan S. Benham, in her 95th year, passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side August 2, 2012. Born in the United Kingdom, she worked in the London vaudeville theater and later helped with the World War II effort. She managed her own motel in upper New York State, later managing a chain of Howard Johnson motels. Joan was an auxiliary pink lady and directed local theater. Her interests in sewing, knitting and cooking served her well and she generously shared those talents with those around her. Joan retired to Bradenton with her husband, Donald C. Benham, who predeceased her. She enjoyed bridge, golf and mostly, cruising. She will be remembered for her flamboyant style. She is survived by two daughters (names omitted) & five grandchildren. She was also blessed to see and hold ten great grandchildren.
