Alexander Douglas 1833
« on: Wednesday 22 April 15 11:49 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am searching for the ancestors and descendants of Alexander Douglas who was born in 1833 in Belfast, and baptised in St Anne's Church on 3 Feb 1833. He was a smith, and married Mary Little in 1856. They had several children and he was still alive in 1911.

I am descended from his brother James. Their parents were John Douglas and Margaret Anne McCaa, and I cannot get back any further than this. I cannot find a Douglas/McCaa marriage.

Any information or ideas would be appreciated.

Hi to everyone and thank you for your replies.

Yes, I have asked before, but I thought I might pick up some new Rootschatters by asking again!

I was unsure about the name McCaa, and when searching I try to check McCall, McGall, McGill, McCaw - what a nuisance! However, I asked on here, and some RCers have found the name McCaa in other sources and thought it may be right, so I also persevere with it. I am sure all the various permutations are the result of priests' interpretations of local accents, and the owners of the names never wrote them down anyway, so spelling would be an irrelevance to them.

Thanks for your interest.

Well you'd be much better off asking for this thread to be closed and just add to your previous one so readers know what's what without having to go back and forward between threads. Just advice!!

Not sure if this is the right line, but I have a Keith Douglas (1920–1944)  who was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, the son of Capt. Keith Sholto Douglas, MC (retired) and Marie Josephine Castellain.
Keith (the younger) was a noted wartime poet.
His grandfather was a Dr William Douglas, born Belfast in 1845 and his grandmother was an as yet unidentified Scots Canadian who left her husband (William) and returned to Canada c 1922.
Dr William's father was an Alexander Douglas of Belfast.
Does any of this look familiar?

Thank you for your reply, William D. Unfortunately, I don't think your Alexander is the same one as mine. You have his son, Doctor William, born in 1845, and my Alexander was born in 1833, so he cannot have been his father. And, Hallmark, my Douglas family do not seem to relate to the aristocrats that feature in the website - at least, not in the mid-19th century. Mine were altogether of the wrong class. Alexander was a seaman and stoker, and his brother James a plasterer. Skilled working class at that stage. Whether I can get them further back in time and find an aristocratic link remains to be seen!

Thank you to you both for your interest,
