Looking for great grandads marriage
« on: Saturday 18 April 15 09:55 BST (UK) »
Hi have just joined roots hat not sure of protocol but am trying get info on my great grandad Nicholas Sloane born in Kilkeel co down Ireland about 1840ish he married Hannah Burns, I don't know when. They had several children including my grandad Patrick Sloane born in Kilkeel 1873. I know they lived in Greencastle Kilkeel when my grandfather was born and that Nicholas was a shoe maker and farmer. That's all I know but would love to know hen they married, and when they died and to trace further back would be amazing. Thanks for reading this .

Hi Sloanequest

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

I can only see some of the children's births starting from 1864:

Margaret 1864 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRHG-56J
John 1866 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F536-F38
Elizabeth 1868 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPYT-N9W
Nicholas 1871 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F5QQ-NX2
Patrick 1873 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGCX-GMN

Can't see the marriage for parents. This may not show in the Civil records if likely before 1 January 1864, given the birth above for daughter Margaret in early 1864. Were the family RC?

A good guide for reference and help notes here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=453932.0 From this link for example, regarding to marriages:

Marriages 1845-1864 (only non Catholic marriages- this usually includes Registry Office marriages)
1864-1921 all marriages in Ireland.

If all of Nicholas and Hannah's children were christened at the same church, this church may also have been where they married and would be worth checking to see what records they may still hold from the Parish Registers.

Thanks that's a great start, your so quick I'm impressed. I'm pretty sure they were Catholics and have spent many hours trying on ancestry to find info with no results. How do I find which church they were baptised in, I am sure this is a basic question but I'm new to this. Thanks

These are some help guides for researching in Co Down. www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=498485.0

You need some help from those here who are more familiar with Co Down and Irish records in general (for which I am not). Sure you will get that help here though  :)

Yes Monica but you can do a basic search for free and narrow it down. It is no longer pay per view but you can take a one off monthly subscription out for £18. For that you can view up to 1000 records during that month. So if you have quite a bit of searching to do it might be worth while

There is a birth for a Nicholas Sloane Co. Down 1831 which would fit the marriage. Not saying it's him but it's a possible.

I can narrow it down a bit more for you Sloanequest. Nicholas Sloane/Hannah Burns 1858 marriage was a Roman Catholic marriage and the district was Newry and Mourne.
