Hi all, I have just gotten a birth certificate for a ancestor and it states she was born at ,school of art,Claremont,Hastings,Sussex
Her parents lived most of their life in Plymouth, were they came from ,and Frank Williams  worked in H M Dockyards as a Rigger,I am puzzled as to why they were there ,can anyone enlighten me ,I live at the other end of the country so have no local knowledge as such.Many thanks for your time. Hi Chris ,The girl who was born there was ,
Daisy,Frances,Emma,Williams,
D O B April 8, 1885,
Parents ,Frank Williams/Emma Jane Williams.
He was a Naval Pensioner at the time,(1884) and then went on to become a Rigger .
He was born 1845.and Emma 1848,

Thanks for that - have just found them on the 1891 census where they are in Devon

Williams, Daisy F E, 6, born Hastings, Sussex, Daughter     
Williams, Emma I, 43, born East Stonehouse, Devon, Wife   
Williams, Frank, 46, born Moretonhampstead, Devon, Head - Rigger

I know Claremont in Hastings rather well, have a very good idea whereabouts in Claremont that they lived, but have just got to find the info to prove my Theory

Think I have found what I was looking for

According to my 'Oracle'

"The Brassey Institute was erected through the munificence of Earl Brassey in 1879 when he was MP for Hastings.  The building in 1911 contained the Museum, Public Library and School of Art.  It was opened in 1881 and was later presented to the town and the several institutions that occupy it are now administered by the Corporation managed by a committee" - Hastings of Bygone Days and the Present by Cousins.(written in 1911)

Thanks to the efforts of Thomas Cole and Frederick Rossiter, the School of Science and Art was formed - first held in Public Hall in Cambridge Road, but later transferred to the Brassey Institute.  The ground floor of the Institute was used by the Rowing Club to store their boats, the first floor contained the public reference library and on the second floor was the assembly room for public meetings. The third floor was originally reserved for Earl Brasseys own use as living accomodation and above that on the top floor was the first Hastings School of Art.
The top floor was not entirely suitable as a School of Art since it was lit by Gas and the western sun poured in at the windows, but this was later altered.

In 1889 the Hastings and St Leonards Museum Association was formed and was situated on the second floor of the Brassety Institute, but in 1900 it had become so popular that it was moved to the ground floor.

The building still stands today in all its glory and is the towns Reference Library and Local Studies Centre.

many thanks for all that  information ,I assume with the boating connection that was why Daisy F E Williams was born there, her father maybe worked at the place ?
