Births in India
« on: Tuesday 20 July 04 01:32 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Can anyone advise me if there are any online records for the births of children of British servicemen serving in India around 1890 - 1905??

The husband was in the Lancashire Fusiliers (I believe) and none of the family can be located in either the 1891 or 1901 censuses so, as he is said to have served in India, I am presuming the family may have been out there duting this period of time.

Failing that, does anyone know where else the Lancashire Fusiliers served during this period of time??

Many thanks

I know it isn't quite the same but I found a website (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~clday/) that has Marriages in India, especially British people who where married their.

I needed it to try and find my great granddad's marriage, it gives you a unique code per marriage to find (like a Vol and Page no) then you can order the certificate at http://www.bl.uk/collections/oiocfamilyhistory/family.html for the cost of 18.00 (or 35.00 if you don't have the codes).

Hope it is some use to anyone!!!

From the book, "The Genealogists Internet" Author Peter Christian:
India
For Official records of British colonial activity in India the India Office Library part of the British Library's Oriental and India Office Collections is the main repository and the British Library web site includes material about these records at www.bl.uk/collections/oriental/records/
The best starting point for genealogical research into British India is Cathy Day's Family Hisotry in India site at http//members.ozemail.com.au~clday/.

Hope it helps

Sorry just realised you also asked for information on the Army:
The author above (same book) recommends Genuki www.Genuki.org.uk/big/MilitaryRecords.html,
Cyndis list has a page devoted to UK Military at www.CyndisList.com/miluk.htm.
Also recommends www.pro.gov.uk/pathways/FamilyHistory/gallery3/
and quote - the PRO provides an extensive series of leaflets to help you understand how the records are organised and how to locate and understand them.  These can be found at www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/Riindex.asp
Good luck

Gillie,

Here is a site I think is great. It has births, deaths, marriages of British Army, Navy people in Malta, India. Also has voters indexes, Army indexes, Royal Marines indexes plus bapstisms, cemetary name indexes,  plus more.

Good Luck
