Holy Trinity Church, Maidstone - Burial Query
« on: Tuesday 07 April 15 22:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a query regarding the Holy Trinity Church in Maidstone. Before it was deconcecrated, were burials carried out there?

I ask this as the FHL film 1835479, which is part of the England, Select Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991 database on Ancestry, mentions several individuals whom I know are buried in the main cemetery on Sutton Road.

So where burials carried out at Holy Trinity or were the funeral services held there, before the body was taken to Sutton Road?

I think then, as now, you can have a service in the local parish church and then be buried elsewhere.  This became more common as churchyards became full. The cemetery in Sutton Road had its own chapel though.

I think there are some remaining gravestones close to Holy Trinity Church but others have been removed. See:

I have at least one ancestor buried at Holy Trinity and there could be more in Sutton Road but I can't find burial records for either cemetery.
I'm finding that,in general, Kent is a difficult country to find records for.

Hi Jibba,

I believe that there were burials conducted on the grounds of the former Holy Trinity Church at 20 Church Street, Maidstone.  Sometime after the church was made redundant (1966) there is a report of the churchyard being cleared and turned into Trinity Park.  To where those burials went, I do not know, but would speculate that they may have been relocated to the Sutton Road cemetery.

Sincerely,
Susan

Hi Sandyjose,

The Holy Trinity Bishop's Transcripts can be rented from the Family History Library in Utah and shipped to a Family History Centre that's close to your location.  You can find the closest FHC to you by going to this link:

https://familysearch.org/locations/centerlocator?cid=hp2-1047
I was having problems with the link late last night, but if they still persist, send an email to the help desk [see upper right corner link to "Get Help".

You have to view the films on their premises.  I have been a non-member librarian and British and European Research Specialist with our local branch since 1983 and can vouch for the very great service that they provide.  You have to set up an account online as all films are now ordered with a credit card directly from the FHL in Utah and shipped by them to the the FHC.  Here's the catalogue listing of the Holy Trinity registers that are available for Holy Trinity, Maidstone:

Baptisms and burials, 1842-1851.
Family History Library
British Film
1835479 Item 2

Baptisms, 1851-1852, 1875-1908; Burials, 1851-1852, 1875-1879, 1888-1889, 1891-1892.
Family History Library
British Film
1835480 Item 1

If you would like to send me a PM with the names you are looking for I can check the index I have to All Saints burials.  It is not 100% coverage of every burial but if your ancestor appears in it you may just get some lucky data.

The other thing you might want to do is sign up with the http://www.kentonline.co.uk/news/digital-archive/
and search for the news article that talks about the closing of the Holy Trinity Cemetery as it should mention to where the burials were removed and when.  The site is pay-per-view, but, again, I've used it extensively and have found it to be very fair and revealing.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
Susan
