I recently bought a New Year's card at an antiques market from an "Evelyn" to Sergeant Major C W Maynard. 509th. Battery. Royal Field Artillery. l believe it dates from WW1 but beyond that l have no knowledge of this man and despite my best efforts via "Ancestry" have been unable to throw any light upon who he was, where he served or whether he survived the War or not, anyone out there with any relevant information l would love to hear from you.

Not sure about this at all. There was a 509th Battery, Royal Field Artillery in XIV Brigade Royal Horse Artillery, the artillery component of 7th Infantry Division. 509th was under command 7Oct1916 to 13Feb1917. It was equipped with 4.5" howitzers. I think it existed before and after. Hopefully someone else has in depth knowledge.   
Griffiths Llandogo, Mitcheltroy, Mon. and Whitchurch Here (Also Edwards),  18th C., Griffiths FoD 19th Century.

I think this is our man, Charles W Maynard who won several medals for his service in World War I.  In 1912, Charles married Evelyn Lily Lewington in Wallingford, Berkshire in the 4th calendar quarter of 1912, so I believe this is probably the Evelyn who sent Charles the New Year's card.

I cannot yet find a definitive record for Charles' death.
