There may be cemetery or crematorium records which would confirm the dates.

However, the easiest way to solve the puzzle would be to purchase the certificates.

heywood is right, the death certificates should solve things for you.
sometimes dual family deaths get a write up in a local paper. I have tried a search of obits without luck perhaps someone else may be successful.

Don't know if you have a tree on ancestry but there are a few all who state the same day of death for both brothers 11/07/1988. One states that Donald died in St James Hospital.
