Thank you all so far, this is all really interesting.

My father in law has said that Herbert was about 5-6 when Lily Baker (his mother) was born but I think he could be wrong from looking at all the replys. He doesn't know an awful lot regarding his family.

Please keep posting I will look into all.

As your father-in-law does not know much about his family, then it would be useful to apply for his Mother's birth and marriage certificates.

In fact, it would be essential to avoid speculation that could be wrong.
