Bit of assistance please with this birth entry in Scotland 1823.
« on: Tuesday 31 March 15 00:53 BST (UK) »
Hello - I am wondering about this second last birth entry - just a father's surname given.  Residence seems to say 'no house' or 'newhouse' - or something.  Do I assume illegitimate?

Janet / Dau of /  . . . Wilson /  . . . . / ?Newhouse /  Jun 28 /   . . . (6 / 7 refers to number of males and females baptised that year)

I think the 'paid to P.W' at the end of the line applies to whole year - place is Applegarth and Sibbaldie in Dumfriesshire

It is not unusual to find partial entries. This is mainly due to poor memory or scrappy notes being used to write out final entries. The following entry omits the mother's name and is out of chronological order. An earlier entry gives the mother as "Isobel" without a surname. It is unlikely that the child was illegitimate - in that case it is more likely that the full names would be entered, especially the mother's.

Thanks for that GR2!

That's helpful!

We do have another illegitimate birth, and as you say the mother is clearly named as is the designation illegitimate.

Well that could be correct - thanks Mare.

Makes sense - better than my suggestion.

Do you think that's what it looks like, Annie?      :-\

I was thinking the second letter was an 'o'.  But I am willing to be swayed. ;)
