Ranald Macdonald of Baleshare, North Uist, about 1750

I've found an intriguing document in the Scottish National Archives in the search for an ancestor and wonder if anyone can tell me anything about the family of Ranald Mcdonald of Baleshare who died some time before 1755. He had a daughter named Christian (alive in 1755) and it's really her I want to find out about, in particular who she married. Has anyone come across this family?

Hello,

have you looked in the Clan Donald book? It says he had one daughter (unnamed) who married Donald Campbell of Scalpay. Ranald is my husbands 8th G Uncle  ;D, what did you find?

Ranald died in 1742 and one of my ancestors, Donald Fraser married his widow, Marion Macdonald.

The document I found said that Alexander Macdonald of Boisdale would stand surety that Donald would pay a bride price for Christian, (50 cows' worth or 1,250 Merks Scots) eldest lawful daughter of the late Ranald Macdonald of Baleshare, to be paid to Archibald Maclean of Kirkibost now tacksman on Heisker. As Donald was now her stepfather, I suppose it makes sense. The document is dated 4th November, 1754. I suppose I was wondering if Christian did indeed marry Archibald Maclean

Very interesting.

By all accounts it was a Catherine Macdonald who married Donald Campbell, looks like you've found another one.

The Clan Gillean book says a daughter of Ranald of Balishare did marry Archibald Maclean of Heisker.

Isn't it wonderful what you can find online. Thanks for sending me that link. It's annoying how daughters get marginalised in these books, but it's always nice to see the end of a story (well the beginning of another, but of only incidental interest).
Now back to Donald Fraser......

Not too up on the MacDonalds history but the "Boisdale" reference would be Isle of South Uist, Inverness-shire.
