Dating photo Caroline Rideout

That explains my nagging doubt. Apparently that area was pretty well flattened by the Luftwaffe in 1940 although Charles Dickens birthplace is still standing. Also the family name Rideout is still present in the area.

She looks late teens - early 20's so perhaps the mother of someone who was in Portsmouth 1900 - 1910ish.

I don't really follow this family website, but this could be her. Caroline Rideout b. 1846 Wimborne, Dorset. Married 30Nov1872 at Wimborne. Who to, I can't see, but presumably a Burbidge.

Agree with Jim, 1870s on a later backing so a reprint. Photo has a grainy quality not commonly seen but for a reprint without a negative it's not bad.

All photos of this era are glued to a cardboard back because the printing-out paper was very thin and couldn't stand on its own. The shiny green card usually had no printing on the back.

Thank you for your help but I admit I am a little confused. I'm fairly new to RootsChat.  Are you saying the photo was printed in 1870s but is a reprint of an earlier dated photo or rather it is an 1870s photo where more than one copy was made?  Pat

Hi Pat

I think Jim and China are saying that the original photo was taken sometime between 1875 - 1879 (based on her clothing/hair etc).  However, the green card that your photo is attached to wasn't available until later, making your photo a reprint of the original.

My family are from Dorset and knew some of the Ridout clan, I think there might even be a distant marriage  or two somewhere along the line!

From that site she married William Burbidge.  There are two relatives of mine on that link!

Thank you for the clarification, Caroline!  My Caroline Louisa Rideout (my ggggrandmother) was from Sturminster Newton, Dorset and married Frederick John Dainton on 27 Apr 1880.

My Uncle was born in Sturminster Newton and my mother in Okeford Fitzpaine!    They grew up with the Rideouts and Rose families of the area in the 1930s.  From what they tell me, quite an idyllic childhood! 

Every few years I get to return to the UK and we always visit Okeford Fitzpaine and the area, and it's like time has stood still (except for the cars of course).  I hope the next time I'm there, I can say the same thing.
