Fishwick Yard

Does anyone know whereabouts Fishwick Yard or Fishwick's Yard was in Preston.  It was the address of one of my ancestors on her marriage certificate in 1859.  Also her marriage was 'by certificate' solemnised in the Parish Church - can anyone explain the significance of this?

It would be a Superintendent Registrar’s Certificate, and the marriage could  be solemnized by a Clergyman of the Established Church of England subject to his being willing to accept the Certificate in lieu of Banns.
The Ordinary Superintendent's Registrar's Certificate, was issued  twenty one days after the names and details of the couple intending to marry were entered in the Marriage Notice Book, which anyone could come and have a look at during the three weeks before the intended marriage.   If no one challenges the right of the couple to marry, the Registrar can issue a certificate entitling them to do so.This  enabled the couple to get married within three months by taking the Certificate to their priest or other celebrant which gave him the authority to conduct a marriage ceremony by the rites of their faith, provided the building was licensed for marriages. This Certificate had a similar function to banns.

Do you have her prior to her marriage on the 1851 census?

Do you have the couple in the 1861 census?

Her address in either or both of these censuses may give a clue as to the location of Fishwick('s) Yard as they may still live in the vicinity. Maybe not, but at least it's a starting point. His address at marriage may also help.

It can be difficult to locate "Yards" as they are often not marked on contemporary maps.

A quick google throws up a Fishwick Yard, Friargate.

Later than your couple married and nowhere near detailed enough to name "Yards" but I imagine that Fishwick Yard may have been behind one of the buildings fronting Friargate.

I can't see it in 1861 but in 1851 it is piece 2266 folios 212-213 as Ruskie says, it is in Friargate area.

Fishwick Yard was on the east side of Friargate, near Orchard Street,  there were only nine houses in the yard in the 1881 census, so would probably not be marked on any map.

Friargate makes sense as her husband's address was Back Lane.  The family seems to have been itinerant and are not settled until the 1871 Census when they live in Swarbricks Court and later Chews Yard. On her marriage certificate Mary Gibson gives her address as Fishwick Yard and occupation Housekeeper which I took to be living at home with her father Thomas (occupation shopkeeper).  However I cannot find Thomas in either 1851 or 1861.

I am not being finicky here - but on Lan -opc it states FISHWOOD Yard ...is that a possible or a mistranscription?

I think I saw mention of Fishwood on a map earlier. I will have to see if I can find it. If I remember correctly it was sort of SE of Friargate .... 

Added: No, I was imagining things - it was 'Township of Fishwick' that I saw earlier ...
