Charles Chalk Goes Missing
« on: Thursday 26 March 15 06:32 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the whereabouts of Charles Chalk from around 1867 through to 1877 and wondered if anyone could shed some light. I have him marrying his wife Fanny (Sharp) in 1855 and have their daughter Jane living with Fanny's parents in 1861 although no sign of Charles and Fanny together in the censuses however 2nd daughter Anne is b. 1861 in Portsmouth. Harry and Emma are also b. 1863 & 66 respectively again in Portsea. In addition, I think I also have him serving 1 months hard labour for neglecting to maintain his family in 1866. The next sign I have of him is the birth of his son Charles George in 1877 (my Gt Grandfather) so my question is where did he go? Prison? Transported? Military? if anyone has any pointers I'd love to hear.

Have you found him in 1881, and found his death (to stop us doing searches when you know the result)?

Is he named on Charles George's marriage certificate, and what occupation specified?

In 1881 Charles is age 58 a general labourer bn Southampton
Fanny is age 46 bn Wittering Sussex
Charles G is 4 bn Portsmouth
Frances H is 1 bn Portsmouth

1891 has him bn Droxford

1871 has Fanny and the children in Portsmouth without Charles RG10 /1130 f106 p12.  He may just have been away overnight and not recorded where he was staying.

Hello Rosie and Chempat, thank you both for your replies, apologies if my initial post was incomplete.
The information I have that I think is correct is:-
Father - John Chalk
b. 1827 - Droxford
1841 Census - Upham
1851 Census - Bishops Waltham - Lodger (Possibly - it seems there may to be two Charles Chalks in the area at that time)
m. 1855 - West Wittering
1881 = 33 Oyster St, Portsea
1891 - 17 Alfred St Portsmouth
1901 - 17 Alfred St Portsmouth
d. 1905
I agree it's possible he could have just been away in 1871 but I'm puzzled why there were no children from 1866 - 1877... The 10 year gap.
So my holes are the 1861 & 1871 Censuses and if he was at their majesty's leisure or service as he doesn't seem to be much of a family man.
Thank you again for your kind assistance.
