Good morning - well - a very helpful lady in Widnes library sat with me for nigh on an hour as we went through record books ...but sadly she explained they don't have ALL the records - there are a few they don't have ...she has promised to contact the relevant people to try and find Mary Catharine Clarke died 1872 ..I tried to say how grateful I was but she stopped me and said she relished queries like that as to her it was a challenge to try and find the record ...she agrees with Text T and thinks it will be St Bedes ...Gerard Street is a 200 yard walk from the library ....so - although we had no joy yesterday - I am hopeful of a result for next Wednesday ...I will return next Wednesday and hopefully get a grave location and visit St Bedes in Appleton Village ....fingers crossed ....and by the way it was a lovely day .. :)

Well - it is a lovely sunny day -went to St Bedes church - only to find there are NO Graves at the church ...there is a monument which I presume is for WW1 / WW2 servicemen and there is a large tomb .....no headstones or graves whatsoever .....
so -where is Mary Catherine Clarke ????
back to the drawing board

St Bede's church is located to the north side of an almost square section of land bordered to the west by Kingsway, to the south by Leigh Avenue, and to the east and north by the road which goes by the name of Appleton Village.

The graveyard is located in the south east corner of this square section of land, i.e. on the corner formed by Leigh Avenue and Appleton Village.  It is not visible from the church as it is hidden by the primary school, other buildings and trees.  It is also not obvious from outside on the roads at the south east corner as the roads are lower than the graveyard, the graveyard being retained by a very high sandstone wall.  The distance from the church to the graveyard is less than 100 yards.
