FWR Website Hospital Records
« on: Thursday 19 March 15 01:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anybody have access to the Forces Records Website?

I am interested to know what level of detail can be learnt from the ww1 Records.

I am only interested in a couple of relatives who were KIA and appear on the  records search.

I am reluctant to subscribe to another website and find the same information as I already have from Ancestry and other FREE resource

I am NOT asking for someone to look up the records for me!!!!!! ;) ;)

thanks

Colin

Hi Colin

There have been a number of threads regarding this website - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=713127.0 - for example. Personally I am wary of any paid site that does not give free trials or introductions for a small amount.

WW1 records were first put online by Ancestry who had a contract with the National Archives. Findmypast appear to have a similar deal now. The records are Crown Copyright so will only be available to other sites if they have an similar agreement. It may be worth contacting the NA and asking for details of any companies that are allowed to publish WW1 individual records - known as WO363 and WO364 in the NA.

Here is a quick introduction into the organisation of medical care during WW1 - http://www.1914-1918.net/wounded.htm . The key is to discover where he is buried. The further back from the front the higher up the treatment ladder he would have been sent. The cemetery descriptions on CWGC often tell you the nearby hospitals. If his body was not recovered then you know you can stop looking for hospital records.

If you identify a particular hospital then a question on their sister site, the Great War Forum, should confirm the availability of records.

Death certificates are usually a waste of money. In almost all cases they only repeat the cause of death - KIA etc, and do not go into details

Hi Colin,
I have a paid account so if you want to let me know their names or a link to their records Ill let you know what fields of info they hold and whether there is any data you don't yet have.

You can actually do this without subscribing, as before you pay you can still see the available fields, but just with the data blurred out.

Hi Colin,
In response to your PM asking for if the records hold anymore info than you already know,  here are the details Forces War Records hold. Hopefully there's some new info in there for you.

James Shepperd (Great Grandfather) 23276 MGC  - I have found a reference to Hospital records 1918. I know he was gassed in 1918 and returned to England.
Any detailed info would be fantastic

As you already knew this person was listed in their MH106 Military Hospitals Admission and Discharges Register

The available info you haven't mentioned and is worthwhile mentioning here and is available is:

age
Index number of admission
rank
years service
Months With Field Force
Injury sustained
Date Discharged Back to Duty
Date of Transfer From Sick Convoy
Religion
Notes written by FWR when Transcribing
Regiment
Battalion (Always useful as you can then make a judgement of the individuals movements/postings)

All in all, very interesting!

Henry George Sheppard (brother of above) 5083 Gloucestershire Regiment KIA - 1916
I have details and photographs of his grave and Image of MIC

No Record for Henry George Shepperd

Joseph Henry Mustoe 26542 Gloucestershire Regiment KIA - 1917
I have details and photographs of his grave and Image of MIC

Resided Town
Date of Death
Fate
Further info (parents)
Rank
Duty Location

George Mustoe 10352 Gloucestershire Regiment KIA - 1915 - Gallipoli

Stephen Enos Uzzell 26952 RAVC - injured but survived

Hopefully that's some use to you, but they do seem to have quite a bit on a couple of your ancestors.

Good Luck!
