Census request for Frittenden Kent
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 14:19 BST (UK) »
Is anyone able to access the 1841 and/or 1851 Census records for Frittenden?
If so I am looking for
Caroline SEARS b. c. 1840 (who are her parents and siblings?)
and any other Sears family members living in Frittenden at that time, if possible.
Also looking for a William FORWARD, b. about 1842, who may or may not be at Frittenden.

I could not find William Forward on the 1861 or 1871 Census records,
anywhere in Kent, but if someone has access and can have a look for me it would be appreciated.

He and his wife Caroline (surname not known for sure), had a son Henry born 1866 and daughter Annie M. Forward, b. 1875.

Many thanks in advance.
Carol

And from the 1851 census:
ref HO107 1619 folio 12: Marsh Cottage Frittenden
Millisent Sears head wid age 48 Pauper formerly ag labs wife born Lydd
William do son age 14 ag lab born Frittenden
Frederick do son age 13 ag lab born do
Caroline do dau age 11 scholar born do
Robert do son age 9 scholar born do
George do son age 8 scholar born do
Jesse do son age 6 scholar born do
Ann do dau age 3 born do
Millisent do dau age 2 born do
folio 14, Rock farm Frittenden
John Sears servant un age 16 farm labourer born Frittenden
The surname of David and Martha (in my previous post) looks more like Screes or Screed (still unclear) on the 1851, so is probably not Sears.
No sign of any Forward family in Frittenden yet.

Hi Carol,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

That is the Caroline I was looking for, along with her brother Jesse.

They are actually brother and sister of Frances SEERES age 14 on the 1841 Census so I am glad you mentioned her, in spite of the name being different,
and I imagine David Seeres is related too.

It looks like you found my William Forward as well, which is most helpful.

Much appreciated.

Hi Foxglove

I can't see a William FORWARD in 1861 (only one born 1828) so wonder if the following is of any relevance given my findings in 1871 ???

1861 shows a William BUTLER? age 18 servant at Peasridge Farm, Frittenden - carter's mate b.Benenden in the household of William PEERSON bailiff

RG9/507 folio 140 page 13

Best wishes

Hi Foxglove,
I've checked through the 1851 census for Benenden for a William Butler aged about 8, but the only one I could find was aged 13, born Sandhurst. He appears on successive censuses, as William Butler, marries a Mary and settles in Cranbrook. I also found William Forward, born 1828, on the census for Benenden, 1861, married to a Frances, so he also is accounted for.  If there is anything else that I can try to find, on either the 1841 or 1851 census that you think might help solve this then please post again. Otherwise, it will remain a mystery, whether William Forward became William Butler for about 20 years, or whether they are two separate people.

Hello and thank you Casalguidi and Carol,

I had not seen your subsequent posts since I left mine on July 6th.

Used to get notification that something had been added but not any more ??

Your efforts are much appreciated.

I had not mentioned that Wm. Forward (b. Dec. 1842) and wife Caroline  (b. Jan. 1840) emigrated to New York State in 1879 - I found them on the 1900 Census which is how I knew these dates of their birth, as well as their children's names and ages. Both children were born in England as mentioned previously  - son Henry in Feb. 1866 and daughter Annie in March 1875.

My main objective was to see if William's wife was Caroline SEARS, which has been confirmed now, and I think it safe to say that William Forward born in Benenden. who was age 8 on the 1851 Census, is a match for the one I am looking for,  born Dec. 1842.

Now, Casalguidi, I have just looked up the William FORWARD family on the 1881 Census, as you mentioned, and that is most definitely the same couple that I found on the 1900 Census of New York State - it says there that they emigrated in 1879, which is why I had not looked for them in England in 1881.

I believe I found something similar with my Pettett family, also from Cranbrook,
who also emigrated to the U.S. (they also lived in the same area -  Golford Road, High Tilt, Cranbrook)

Mary Ann Pettett (nee Breeds) was the sister in law of a Sarah SEARS, who I have been trying to link to the family of Caroline (Sears) Forward.

Your finding the Forwards in that area of Cranbrook on the 1881 Census, is most interesting.

I think it probably a co-incidence about the Butler family but I will keep them in mind.

Thanks again to both of you for all the help.

Cheers,
Foxglove
