Unknown Censuses?
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 11:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I've recently discovered a Constable's 1787 census in Westmorland. It was by no means complete  - and really just a list of names to places with the man's occupation - but I found one of my ancestors and family on it.

Until then, I wasn't aware that there were other smaller (i.e. not national) 'censuses' . I thought it was 1841-1901 with a few virtually useless national ones in the immediately preceding years.

Does anyone know of any others? Is there a hidden resource out there, or am I the only one who was in the dark? ( wouldn't be the first time!)

Jill.
HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

I have some indexes for 1811, 1821 and 1831 census indexes for Hackney and Poplar in London.  I know there are others.  Not sure how you find out about them.  Perhaps Genuki can help or your local FHS

Early Censuses

There is a very good book published by Lochin Publishing.

It's by Colin R Chapman called Pre-1841 Census & Population Listings in the British Isles.

It has an index of all counties/parishes where pre 1841 census are extant.

There were headcounts done in 1801, 1811, 1821 & 1831.  A very few of them listed the head of the household and some even named all.

Other listings i.e. pre 1801 include lists made for other reasons such as tithe payers or taxes of various kinds so only show a sub section of the population.  Tax lists would mainly show the head only.  Other rolls for military purposes would show men of fighting age for example.

The best place to find records of this kind is the local records office or family history society.  They are likely to have been published at one time or another.

I have the book so let me know if you want me to look at any particular county or parish.

Cheers,
Pam

Hi - Cas here,
I would be interested to see if there were useful records 1750-1850 in:

Edinburgh (Canongate)

Lanarkshire (Shotts area?)

Ross & Cromarty (Avoch/Black Isle, Lochbroom)

cheers (fingers crossed.....)

Hi there,

The September issue of Your family Tree has an article on this very subject.  It gives a list of all some areas that have these 'Secret Census Records' in England, Wales, 'Islands', Scotland and Ireland - both North and the Republic, plus the contact details to access them.  I would type it in - but it is a lengthy list.  (Note:  I don't think this is a completely comprehensive list, so there is likely to be other records out there).

For the ones that people have asked about though...

Aberdeenshire - "Glentanar - 1812 'Names list" (Aberdeen and NE Scotland fhs)
Edinburgh - nothing I'm afraid
Lanarkshire - "Lesmahagow, 1783 Examination Roll" (Glasgow City Archives, Mitchell Library, Glasgow)
Ross-shire - "Barvas (Isle of Lewis) 1782, Ecclesiastical census" (National Archives of Scotland)

Cheers,
Clare

ELLIOT, CROZIER, HAY, AITCHISON, COWAN - Roxburghshire
BETT - Kinross-shire, Fife and Glasgow
CHAMBERS, BRUFF, WESTMACOTT - Glasgow
And many, many more...

Have you really? Would it be too much trouble to ask if there is anyone with the surname De Boo, or DeBoo, or Deboo on them?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex
