thanks all for al of that info, firstly im not sure what a gedcom really is, I don't know anyone that I could transfer the tree to, and I don't own a printer

and you say that my tree would stay on ancestry indefinitely? well how can I look at it and do work on it manually if im no longer a member? surely I will just get a screen telling me I need to log in?

You just log in as normal, same username and password.

If you go on a certain auction site you could purchase a "Family Tree Maker" CD second hand for as little as 99 pence.
This you can load onto your home computer and then download the tree from Ancestry straight to it. Then you can work on it to your hearts content at home when you want. I can never understand why anyone wants to work on their tree online anyway, but that is of course just my personal preference. ;)
Gedcom explanation...

I know of a 'tree' on Ancestry that has been there for a very very long time.  It is a public tree - and the owner is deceased.   Nothing has been added to it for years now...
and cos its public anyone can access it and see what it says.

There is one on Ebay for 99 pence, if you put Family Tree Maker in the search box it is the 26th in the list- for some reason it will not let me copy the page for the link.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1311.R1.TR6.TRC1.A0.H1.Xfamily+tree+maker.TRS0&_nkw=family+tree+maker&ghostText=&_sacat=0

"NEW Family Tree Maker Deluxe sealed
£0.99
0 bids
+ £2.80 postage"

Even with the postage it still works out cheaper than a months membership , there are lots on there for the same price all with no bids, so shouldn't be a problem to pick one up.
Have you thought of asking for a copy for your birthday ? A new one often comes with a membership deal.  ;D

I think Xinia she still wants to be able to work on it

no I don't need to be able to work on it in the same way that I do currently, I don't mind reverting back to using books and such like, I just need something to store it on so I don't loose all the info I currently have
