But it's always better to have a private tree on your own PC or laptop (backed up regularly of course).

Best way - imho!
Then there is never any issue with the technology changing, the subscription needing renewing, the PC going wrong, leaving it for years and coming back to find the media it was stored in is then obsolete, etc etc.

I have trees on Ancestry never belonged, just add anything I know is correct, or delete.
