Might get a better response if you ask a moderator to move this topic to the board for Co. Down.

Are you sure hes your Great Grandfather? Given the fact he was born about 1805, I would think he would be at least your GG or GGG Grandfather. :)

Info posted about him on this family tree site:

You are correct Robert Fowler is my gg/grandfather. His daughter Jane married Richard McQuillan in 1853 at St Margaret's rc church in Ayr. Thank you very much for the website. I have Richard on the beginners board because I do not know where he was born in Ireland this was left blank on his death certificate.  His age varies in any census but it would be around 1835.

Doubtful if a birth record will exist for him from that time period, prior to civil registration (1864) you will be relying on church records, which without knowing where he came from ( at least county and preferably Parish) and the fact that the records are far from comprehensive makes the task very difficult.

A starting place may be  the Irish Times genealogy site name search shows the name concentrated in the north east of Ireland in the mid 19th century, particularly Antrim:

In order to find church records, if they survive for such an early period, you'll need to know the family's religion. Have a look at the resource topics at the start of the DOWN board and the IRELAND board.

There are 2 topics for Richard McQuillan-
