Origins.net
« on: Thursday 12 March 15 16:37 GMT (UK) »
I've just received an e-mail to say that this site is due to close in the next couple of days.  All records held by them, will be available via Find My Past.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I hadnīt realised they still existed. Used to use them several years ago, but stopped when a lot of the records they had became available elsewhere.

I haven't really used them.  I did know that they were associated with the Borthwick in York, and that now there is a link between Borthwick and FindMyPast.  I've always dealt direct with York when ordering copies and have visited them fairly regularly.

Maybe just me, but I find it a bit sad that everything seems to be shrinking towards Ancestry and FindMyPast, and consequently we are "guided" by them, in our research  :o  Ah well!!!  :-X

Agree that it is not good to go too much in the direction of "monopoly" :)

No. Findmypast and Ancestry are competitors, but between them have cornered a significant portion of the market.

Continuing from Craclyn's comments "Findmypast" is a privately held UK-based online genealogy company.

ancestry.com is a publically traded corporation based in Provo, Utah. Stock symbol ACOM

I had about 6-months left on Origins so FindMyPast have extended my World sub by 12-months to compensate.  As I'd already taken advantage of their half-price offer a few months ago I'm now subscribed until May 2017  ;D

Ancestry stopped being a publicly traded company when Permira, a London-based private-equity firm, bought it in 2012.
