In the late 1950s and early 60s the Town clerk at Boston Lincs was named Phythian. I wonder if this is a modern spelling of the same surname?

I think it's quite likely - see this

Apparently likely to be a variant of Vivian

John dies before 1851
Margaret remarries 1859 to James Lord
Alice b.1829 marries Robert Grundy in 1850
Mary b.1831 marries Thomas Hindley in 1850
John b.1833 marries Jane as lizdb's post
Margaret b.1836 marries William Higham in 1864

so just these two to locate
Elizabeth b.1838
Ann b.1840

I think we're still tracking Ann, born 1840?

There are two Ann Phetheans born around the same time, but ours is the one born in April qtr 1840, baptised August 1840 as the parents are John and Margret.

What about this marriage?

Oct qtr 1861
Bolton
8c
299

to possibly
James Cullen
Richard Leather
John Morris

Ancestry suggests that the other Ann married John Makin

Wow guys! Thanks so much!

I think GenesReunited might have some holes in its records. I couldn't find the 1851 census record for them at all. I think I remember seeing an 1861 census for a family "Lord" and dismissing it! I'll have to check it again.

The father of that one according to LancashireOPC was Joseph whose occupation was a Manufacturer.

hunkyhywell, have you tried looking for these families on
LancashireOPC http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
and LancashireBMD
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

You may be able to follow them and their children.  ;)
