Bride's father's occupation
« on: Sunday 08 March 15 17:32 GMT (UK) »
Would someone be able to tell me the occupation of the bride's father from the marriage certificate. I just can't make it out, it looks like Butler and I can't find any occupation that looks similar to that. Many thanks

It's Butler!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butler

A servant in a (usually) large house, in charge of the dining room, wine cellar, and pantry.

Not necessarily I have several significant occupation changes amongst my ancestors. Also be aware that his occupation may have been upgraded eg he may have been a servant but butler sounded better. Have you found the bride's father on censuses?

There is, according to my Dictionary of Old Trades, Titles and Occupations, a Buller - as in Bulldog.  Assistant, protector and enforcer of a proctor's authority at a University.  It was part of their duties to patrol University towns in the evening to act as a kind of university police. Forerunner of the term "bully"  :o :o

Thanks Jan and bumble I think I have found the bride's father in Census of 1901 and 1911 (Ireland) but now I am not sure. Servant may be right but until I find the bride's birth certificate I can't be even sure I have the right people.  Was just surprised to find Butler in 1886 Ireland!!  Buller is not something I have ever heard of but it does look more like Buller than anything else. Thanks everyone I will keep on with my mission!

Cathy :)
