Enoch Cattle - Clerkenwell
« on: Saturday 07 March 15 16:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi all - first post on here and I'm hoping someone may be able to save my sanity  :)

This is a bit long winded, so apologies and I hope it makes sense.

My GGG grandad Enoch Cattle, was born in Clerkenwell in 1809 (baptised 1810 St Giles Cripplegate, d.1891 in Hornsey).

According to an old paper family tree, I believe Enoch had 6 siblings (Henry 1812, John James, 1814, Martha Ann 1817, William George 1819, Christopher James 1822, Charles Thomas 1824).

On the birth & baptism records for all of the above, the parents are listed as William Cattle and Elizabeth and where an address is stated, it's the same on most of them - Cock Court, Snow Hill, so I know these all 'belong together'.

I have since found 2 other possible siblings Elizabeth Tory born August 1802, christened Nov 1802 at Saint Luke, Old Street and William Torry, born May 1804, baptised Oct 1804 also at Saint Luke. The parents for these are listed as William Henry Cattle and Elizabeth.

What's the likelihood that these 2 people are Enoch's older siblings? If the old tradition of naming the first born after the parents is true, then it would make sense as I've always wondered where the name Enoch came from as it never seemed to fit.

As well as working out if the above are related, my other brickwall is Enoch's parents. None of the records include a maiden name for Elizabeth and I have no other info on her at all. William Cattle is also a problem. I believe he was a tailor and apparently (according to Enoch's obituary), William was born in York ..... but, there are loads of William Cattles in York &I have no idea which is the right one. There are also numerous marriages between William Cattles and Elizabeths, but after following most of these marriages through, none show up with Enoch as their child!

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be most grateful.

Thank you
Jackie

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Fathers occupation was Taylor on Martha's 1817 baptism.  What was it on the 1802 and 1804 baptisms

Registers are pre-1812 so no further clues on those

Are there really that many William Cattle's marrying Elizabeths in the right time and place?

On Ancestry, I didn't see any in London and just 1 in York

Hmm, that William Cattle may be buried in Yorkshire in 1836

Do we have any information on the parent's deaths?

There's a burial at St Ethelburga,Bishopsgate London in 1808 for William Henry Cattle b1779

so my preference would be to ignore the 1802 and 1804 children for the time being

Hi StevieSteve

I don't know where William and Elizabeth got married, nor when. Don't even know where Elizabeth is from - she's a bit of a mystery.

I have discounted the William/Elizabeth Atley marriage. I did have them on my tree in Ancestry for a while, but when you go through their lives, nothing ties in. They dont seem to leave York, let alone have a child called Enoch.

Don't think it can be this William - Enoch was born in 1809 and his youngest sibling in 1822.

Yes, that's what I meant - I'm thinking that William Henry who died in 1808 fathered the 1802/1804 children so they're nothing to do with Enoch & the rest

Hmm, that William Cattle may be buried in Yorkshire in 1836

Do we have any information on the parent's deaths?

Nothing at all I'm afraid.

This is the dilemma....

Before Christmas, I was in contact with a gentleman on Ancestry who is the 'official' keeper of the Cattle history for the Yorkshire area (he's been researching it for decades)
and
From a different source, I received a Cattle pedigree that was apparently created by a professional genealogist years ago
but
While these 2 sources have a lot of similarities, there are also a lot of differences; people who appear on my pedigree appear on this gentlemans tree, but with different parents/siblings. (None of the Cattles were very imaginative when it came to naming their children!)

Now i don't know which of these 2 sources are right or wrong, so I decided the best approach was to ignore what I had and go back to Enoch and go from there.

From the pedigree, this is the information going backward from Enoch:

Enoch (I know his details are spot on)
William Cattle - bapt 19 March 1786 in Gilling by Richmond
William Cattle  - was a Breeches maker, born July 1761. Got freedom of York in 1783, married Catherine Wright in 1782. Supposedly died Cape of Good Hope (no dates available for this)

I can find details on both the Williams listed above, but cannot categorically make the connection to Enoch and London - and that's what I think I need to find.
