I would suggest one of two ways to approach this. Either you can go to your nearest public library, where you should be able to access ancestry for free. Then you can find your grandfather in other US census records, to compare ages and/or birthplaces, and go from there.
Alternatively, post a lookup request here on the US board. Someone will kindly look up your grandfather in the census records, as long as you provide as much info as you know about him.
