Philos,
Did you find the information on ancestry in the records, or on a member's tree? The reason I ask is that the trees uploaded to ancestry are notorious for incorrect information. If the 1920 census has Thorleif as a nephew, that is how you should approach it, until it can be proven otherwise. It does seem more likely, as they went to the US at different times.
In answer to your question about subscriptions, unfortunately there isn't a lot you can find out without one. The kind people on Rootschat do look up a lot of things for others though.

I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)
Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.
