Finland resources
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 20:05 GMT (UK) »
I have recently discovered some of my Swedish ancestors were born in Finland. Can anyone point in the direction of the best sites to search for their records please?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

There are some Finnish records on familysearch.org.  Might be a good starting point while you are gathering information about other useful sources.
Crackett, Cracket, Webb, Turner, Henderson, Murray, Carr, Stavers, Thornton, Oliver, Davis, Hall, Anderson, Atknin, Austin, Bainbridge, Beach, Bullman, Charlton, Chator, Corbett, Corsall, Coxon, Davis, Dinnin, Dow, Farside, Fitton, Garden, Geddes, Gowans, Harmsworth, Hedderweek, Heron, Hedley, Hunter, Ironside, Jameson, Johnson, Laidler, Leck, Mason, Miller, Milne, Nesbitt, Newton, Parkinson, Piery, Prudow, Reay, Reed, Read, Reid, Robinson, Ruddiman, Smith, Tait, Thompson, Watson, Wilson, Youn

I would like to add that if you use the second link first to search for a person and if you find them you will then have a parish.
You can then use the first link to search in that particular parish in the actual book.

Thank you Craclyn for your suggestion.
And thank you Ian for the links. I will check them out, and let you know how I get on.

Hi there

I found the Hiski website a  good place to start, however,  be aware it is far from being a complete resource, it still requires many updates and is mainly done by volunteers, you may or may not find all the parishes and also your ancestor records. There  arent many records either post 1900 ( due to strict data protection in Finland,  but I think this is under review, or is about to be amended)

the national archives service can be frustrating(Digi.narc)  and requires a bit of navigation and some Swedish or finnish skills at times. You have to wade through a lot of images once you find the parish you are searching in.

also try this crowd: The Finnish Family History Soc

http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/index_eng.htm

A nicer place to look in my opinion,  and even a  members forum ( you can guest post)  and they are  quite helpful with questions and queries.

May I ask which areas in Finland you are interested in?  Just that there is also the Karelian Records database, if you think your ancestors came from  that part of Karelia ( near East border)  which  is now part of Russia. Some good complete records also .

Hope the above helps!

Diggie

Hi Diggie,
Thanks for the tips.
I have discovered that one of my ancestors who married and had family in Härnösand in Sweden was actually born in Nykarleby, across the gulf in Finland. Her and her brother and sister were all in Härnösand, but I have been unable to locate the parents as yet.

You could be in luck as there is quite a lot to look through from Nykarleby and is in Swedish too.
