Mary Gibson arrived Wellington on the Gothic 1906
« on: Monday 02 March 15 05:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have a record of my grandfather, Sydney Barnes Gibson, arriving in Wellington in 1906. Directly underneath his name is a Mary Gibson shown as 'wife' even though it appeared they embarked at different places (Plymouth and London).

This Mary has, up until this time, been unknown to me or my family as he was later ,c1917, married to Rubina Kelman (my grandmother).

By the above, I assume Mary died between 1906 and 1917 (or divorced). All I have is the passenger record of the Gothic. Her DOB is c1882 and Sydney's is 1884. Does anyone know any further about Mary? (death perhaps)

Thanks

John

Hi John on FindMyPast there is

Plymouth 03626 Sidney B Gibson Grocer aged 22 Wellington

on the Gothic leaving 10th Feb 1906 there is no Mary with him

There is a Mary Gibson leaving Liverpool on the Essex on the 11th July 1906 but she is with her husband Thomas and 2 children Thomas and Doris

How odd this passenger list has a Mary with Sydney

I suspect the passenger list on Family Search may be wrong as on Sydney's WW1 file he married Rubina Kellman on 12/03/1914

Thanks Janette. At least you have confirmed I am not going insane!

The actual original passenger list of the Gothic, as completed at the time, does indeed have Mary Gibson as wife of Sydney Barnes Gibson.

Family story goes that he left his father in Nottingham as he did not want to inherit his father's business but I do wonder whether a marriage to an Irish girl may have also been an issue.

There is a Mary Gibson who died in 1912 on the NZ BMDs but I think she was the wife of a Walter Gibson. The age is out by about 5 years but still possible.

There is also a Mary who is involved in a court case in 1907 for giving false deatails at the registration of birth of a child. I have found that she is not the Mary I am seeking.

Thanks

John

Hi John

Looking at the image (ancestry website) of the passenger list for the "Gothic" to Wellington 1906, the listing for your man shows >

Ticket No:  03626

Sidney B. GIBSON - 22 years - occupation :   Grocer
Port of embarkation:  Plymouth

[Above and below his entry are listed >
Arthur EDWARDS - sculptor
Mark JOSEPHS - shoemaker ]
Can't see Mary GIBSON on same page ?

Edited to add :   Ancestry passenger List is identical to the one found at FindMyPast  (FindMyPast) site.

Hi John

The info I gave you for Sidney B. GIBSON from the passenger list (ex ancestry and FindMyPast) was one of two* manifests available for the "Gothic" to NZ, February 1906.   And the list Sidney (Sydney) appeared on, named only the passengers embarking at Plymouth.

The "Gothic" had departed London on 7 February 1906, from where it went to Plymouth and embarked further passengers.   It's journey was via Capetown (SA) and Hobart (TAS) so by the time of reaching Wellington, it had many more souls aboard.

I found the second "Gothic" 1906 manifest by looking up the names of other passengers who appeared in the familysearch listing (Inward Manifest for the "Gothic" 1906 - NZ Immigration Passenger Lists).

So, from the second* list of passengers - those who embarked at London - there is the following .

Ticket No. 8302   (Embarked, London)
GIBSON - Mrs M. - 25 years - married - destination:  Wellington, NZ

There was nothing noted about her nationality.

"The actual original passenger list of the Gothic, as completed at the time, does indeed have Mary Gibson as wife of Sydney Barnes Gibson"

Looking at the image from Family search, there is something different ...

For every other family who travelled together, the family name has been Dittoed  from the head person to show that they were travelling as one family

In the case of Gibson, both names Sidney and Mary have been entered separately.

It does state that Mary is a "wife" but it doesn't necessarily mean that she was Sydney's wife.

EDIT:
I forgot to add that the entire manifest is in alphabetical order, and they are the only two  poeple called Gibson aboard the Gothic.
It seems that their names appear in consecutive order for alphabetical purposes only
