William INGRAM - shipping records

Could anyone please give me any information on the ship that William Ingram would have  travelled on from the UK to Australia.  The period would have been from 1885 to 1889.  William Ingram was born in London in 1863.  He would have travelled to Australia with his wife, Jane (born approx. 1864) and their son, William, who was born in 1885.  Any help would be very much appreciated.  cmatt.

Do you know which colony he was heading to? 

There were six colonies  to choose from :

Western Australia
South Australia
Tasmania
Victoria
New South Wales
Queensland

And of course, the family may have migrated to New Zealand, another of the British Colonies

Do you have Jane’s maiden details?

There’s a birth registered giving a birth for Sept 1889 at the QLD BDM online index. 
Elizabeth Ada, with parents as William INGRAM and Jane Harriett WATSON.  #C3846.

There’s a death registered  1897 Qld BDM for a Jane Harriett INGRAM, with parents as Thomas and Jane WATSON.    That dc should give you how many years in the colony, and details of marriage, children of the marriage, and where buried.  # C3444.

Thank you for your details about assisted immigration to Australia from England.  I have tried the website you quoted - but all the William Ingrams are either too old or too young.  I am wondering if he was not assisted in his passage to Australia.

Thanks to majm for the details regarding searching for family via Qld BDM website.  I have seen Elizabeth Ada's birth on this website.  She was born in Paddington, Brisbane.
It seems that William and Jane (nee Watson) had 1 son, William in England in 1885.  So my thought was that after William was born in 1885, they boarded a ship to Australia.  This is where I come to a stop, because I can not find any evidence of assisted passenger arrivals into Brisbane/Queensland between 1885 and 1889.

Hi there

So, from your research that you have already done, was Jane's maiden name WATSON ?  If so, then it would be worthwhile you spending some pennies on the death certificate for a Jane Harriett INGRAM who died in 1897 in Queensland.

Qld death registrations are very informative.  They are not like English ones.  Qld death registrations include details about the person's parentage, and their marriage and the children of the marriage.  And one of the other details is the answer to the question "how long in the colonies".    Armed with the answer to that question, you can then start to search through the immigration records that each of the six separate colonies (now the six states) hold.   It is very likely that Jane INGRAM's husband provided the information on her death registration, so IF that is your family, then his information is likely to be accurate.

These are the headings on a Qld death cert from the 1880s
When and where died
  Name and surname
Rank or profession
Sex and  age
Cause of death
Duration of last illness
Medical attendant by who certified
When he last saw deceased
Name and surname of   father and  mother (maiden surname) if known with rank or profession
Signature,   description and   residence of informant
Signature of registrar, date, where registered
When  and  where buried, undertaker by whom certificed
Name and religion of Minister or names of witnesses of burial
Where born   and how  long in Australia
Where married , at what age , to whom 
Issue in order of birth  , their names    and  ages

With that document you can then validate info you already have, and have new info to validate.

Maybe my next step is, as you say, to obtain the death certificate of Jane Ingram.  Her husband's death certificate said he had been in Australia for about 50 years.  So not too much help there.  Maybe Jane's will be more forthcoming.
