Hi Gill,

If you send me a PM with your personal e-mail address, I'll send you a copy of Duncan's DC.

It reads as follows:

1901 Death on 19th August 1909 at Mauldslie Kennels, Carluke, Lanarkshire
Duncan Stewart, age 78, Retired Orchard Keeper, Widower of Sarah Robertson
Son of John Stewart, Farm Grieve (deceased) and Janet Stewart nee Leckie (deceased)
Cause of Death: Cancer of Bladder
Informant: John Pettigrew, Son-in-Law

Parents confirmed unless their Son-in-Law John Pettigrew got his info wrong?

Do you know which of his daughters was the wife of John Pettigrew?

Anne  :)

P.S. I have Duncan & family on Census transcriptions from 1861 - 1901 along with 'possible' 1841/51 although on these there's a different mother's name. I can copy & paste the info here or send it to you privately.

a clear out was done and a lot of paperwork shredded including certificate
You can get a digital copy of that certificate at modest cost on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. A paper copy costs more.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
