Hugh Paterson
« on: Tuesday 05 July 05 18:36 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather Hugh Paterson born 1825 lived at Ballyhenry where he married Margaret Jane McMillen, (Millen) or (Mullen) although marriage certificate definitely states McMillan. They were both of Ballyhenry, Parish of Newtownards, County Down. Hugh's was a weaver and his father namely, William Paterson was likewise. William was married to Elizabeth nee Kennedy. Hugh was resident in Glasgow in 1848 but returned to Ballyhenry where he married Margaret Jane McMillen on 14th May, 1853. He succeeded in Glasgow and became owner/occupier of a Beaming Shop in Rumford Street in Glasgow's East-end. His son Robert McMillan Paterson was my grandfather. I have tried, unsuccessfully, for years to trace the lineage of Hugh Paterson son of William. Can anyone out there help. I know there must be relatives still in Ireland of either the Paterson or McMillan side (Newtownards) my mother who lived to be 90 died only 12 years ago and she used to spend holidays there. I am also interested to know the family history of William Paterson from County Down who emigrated to the USA in the 18th century from County Down. The said William rose to fame both as a lawyer and senator such that the town of Paterson, New Jersey was named in his honour. My mother's cousin who died only 8 years ago age 92 told me that he was one of ours but that is not to say that mine are of that line or rather that he is of ours, but I am intrigued to know that William's lineage and whether there is a connection. The Mormon Library in Phoenix Arizona confirmed that he came with his family to the USA from County Down as also that the town of Paterson, New Jersey was named in his honour.

Hello Strathaven,

A letter to the Editor of one of the local papers might produce a resut.

Hi Strathaven, have you seen the Patersons and McMillan/McMillen and the Ballyhenry pages online at www.comberonline.org [history section] you need to download my historical index to Comber area. Before this website existed the previous Welcome to Comber website  carried a detailed McMillan/McMillen  family history. I may know how to find this but it may take time. So staying in contact soon, Jim Gracey

Dear Jim!

Good to hear from you. Could this be the breakthrough I have been looking for all these years. Any further help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Meantime, will do as you say and download your historical index to Comber area on www.comberonline.org

Thanks again for getting in touch. Meantime I have sent an e-mail to the Newtownards Chronicle with attachment of two pictures of Hugh Paterson and his wife taken in the 1880s. If you live in the vicinity of Newtownards then you might read something in the Chronicle.

Meantime, many thanks for getting in touch.

Robert Paterson Currie

Dear Jim

I have downloaded www.combefronline.org history section. Phew! what an amazing collection of date. At Last I know the exact location of the townland of Ballyhenry. I found pp 57 - 67 particularly interesting as there are several McMillen's mentioned there. One Robert McMillan was significant as I know that my great-grandmother had a brother namely, Robert McMillan who was known to the family as 'rich uncle Robert' because he had a boot and shoe business in Nottingham. I have a picture of him taken with my grandfather (his nephew namely Robert McMillan Paterson. The Robert McMillan who appears on your history section may well have been a relative - who knows?

Your site is extremely interesting and I will take time to study it in detail.

Meantime, if any in your history society think they can help me then they are free to contact me at my personal e-mail address: Moderator comment: email address removed to prevent spam and other abuses, Please use the PM system to exchange such info

Meantime, thanks again!
