1851 Census - Carter and Gear or Geer
« on: Sunday 22 February 15 22:58 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody help me?
I am searching for my family in the 1851 census I believe in either Strood,  Frindsbury or Rochester. But having spent at least a day on various website am still no further forward.
The details are Richard Carter agri labour born 1805 Rochester, wife deceased - his children Emma 1839, Richard 1834, Henry 1836 ( their may be others) plus 2 step- children surname Gear or Geer or Geere Charles (1829) and John (1827).
There is a possibility that Richard is dead - but where are the children who all get married in the 1850's in Strood/Rochester/Frindsbury.
There are at least 2 other Gear children both are married by 1851 and have not taken their step-siblings or siblings in.
Richard's parents are in a workhouse without the children either?

Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

When they turn up again in 1861, what ages and places of birth are given for each?
As 1841 has rounded ages and no specific place of birth beyond just the county, then that info would be useful when searching for them.  WHere are they then living too? Where and when did Jane die? Where and when did the children marry? Is Richard described as deceased on any of tbeir marriages? Trying to build up a bigger picture might help find where Richard was in 1851.

By 1861 the children that I can find are all married, mostly after 1851.
Jane CARTER was previously married her surname was Geer or Gear or one of a number of different spellings. Apart from the 3 Gear children listed in 1841 there is also another daughter married by 1841.

The key person I want to trace is Richard my G^4 grandfather born 1834/5 he is my direct ancestor. He was depending on which census you look at born in Strood or Frindsbury. If you don't know these are neighbouring villages

I have checked without success the for Richard G4GF with:
elder Gear/Geer daughters no
Carter grandpafents

I have also search for the two elder step brothers John & Charles and the younger children I could trace in 1861 Henry & Emma. I have searched Stro
od/Frindsbury and Kent by both surnames Carter/Gear/Geer and no surname. But cannot trace them as eisther individuals or a family hence the request for help.

Hi
Yes, I know you ewant to trace Richard.
But if he is proving difficult, and if the children are likely to still be at home in1851, then it is an idea to use them to try and find out what was happening in the family home in 1851. Thats why I asked for their details from 1861 to give us something more accurate to search with.
