Smalinski! I always knew there must be some Polish blood in there somewhere. Many thanks for your help. I think the 'gn.' is actually 'ge' and on the next line is the continuation of the word. Following the wife's name I think it's 'bisher in Diensten' / up to now in services.

Good luck for checking "Kirchenbücher" - civil registration is starting in 1874.

I have no Polish ancestors in the Danzig area, -
but my ancestors in Palatinate had Polish cousins in Paris, France!

So it looks possible that Marie Luise was actually Schalinsky rather than Smalinski!
