two different names on the same war grave headstone

taking photo's today in Paddington old cemetery I came across headstones that indicated a name, rank and service number, serving as, and a different name! what is the reason for this?

A number of young men joined up under assumed names, perhaps because they were under age!

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

ta BB, that would make it very difficult to trace a person, how would their real name be discovered for say pension purposes?

Were they Commonwealth War Graves? Have you tried looking for them in war records to see what they say?

yes, they are cwgc graves, some of them dated between 1919 & 1923, not sure what conflict they might refer to though.

have not searched cwgc records as i was not looking for anyone in particular just taking photo's with the intention of uploading them to the sub photo project associated to cwgc.

My gt.grandfather has a CWGC grave and he died in 1919 as a result of being gassed in WW1; I'm sure there would be others dying from their injuries long after the war was over.

I think the dates for inclusion are 4 August 1914 to 31 August 1921.
