I don't think Wharncliffe should be dismissed completely. The steps may not have been at the main entrance.
Looking at the aerial view of Wharncliffe in the first link, it's obviously not a level site & the steps may have been down to the grounds from one of the many buildings, for instance the wing at far left of the picture.
