Ancestry has this entry transcribed as Sara CHILLINGTON. ::)

The Vic Disc shows
Saml CHILLINGTON as you have posted.
His last address was Hospital Ballarat, 26/5/1909.

He has no-one of the same (or similar) name near him at his burial location -
New Cemetery INDA 12.44

However, those buried nearby may turn out to be related with further searches.

Good Morning Everyone,

Some excellent fossicking which rather confirms my belief that he did not return to England.

I thought sparrett had some possible thoughts, only for those to be very successfully trumped by mollipops1, Noells and John Bell with his death in Ballarat and, of course, the accurate mention of his parents' names.   What happened to him during the intervening 61 years from arrival to death?
That narrative may forever remain unwritten where the migrants, including the "Exiles", arriving in mid-century headed for the goldfields, never to be heard of again!!!

He does not appear to have broken the law, married or done anything significant to warrant a newspaper entry.....but he lived to a good age.

For the moment, thank you all for your efforts,

BAC3

You could order his death certificate which is downloaded immediately for $AU21.  The informant would have been asked for the date and place of birth, as well as, if any, marriage details and children.  Of course, in this case, as he was in hospital it's likely that the informant was a hospital official who may have little knowledge of the deceased.  On the other hand, the informant knew enough about an 88year-old man to know the names of his parents, even the maiden name of his mother so perhaps there is more information on the certificate.

Electoral roll has this entry.  My access only starts in 1903.

1903
Samuel CHILLINGTON, Binnie? St, Ballarat East (subdistrict Black Hill), labourer

No others of that surname at that address.  there do not seem to be any other CHILLINGTONs enrolled in Ballarat, or in Victoria at all.

I can't see any in the current phone listings.

Hospital Admissions:

Castlemaine Mt Alexander Hospital Register:
Samuel CHILLINGTON
Admitted: 8 Jan 1860
Age: 26
Status: Single
Born: England
Residence: Fryers Creek

Ballarat Hospital Register:
Samuel CHILLINGTON
Admitted: 13 May 1909
Age: 88
Occupation: OAP (old age pensioner)
Status: Single

From the above records he appears to have been around the gold mining areas for a large amount of his life in Victoria.

Hello,

As I mentioned early migrants, including "Exiles", in the mid-19th century, naturally gravitated towards the goldfields, dreams of riches etc., and were rarely heard of again in their lifetimes, especially those that remained unmarried.  It seems as though Samuel CHILLINGTON was a prime example.

By the way, Merlin, any indication why he was in hospital or cause of death, probably dust-related.

Thank you again,

BAC3
