Victoria: Samuel CHILLINGTON "Exile"
« on: Thursday 19 February 15 21:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Samuel CHILLINGTON, born 1828 Wolverhampton,  Staffordshire, Father: John.... Mother: Ann. Arrived Williamstown 25/01/1848 aboard "Marion": Disposal "Went ashore at his own request" and that is the last mention.  TROVE, LDS, PROV all negative to my knowledge.  Possibility he returned to England as record of similar profile in 1881 Census, but nothing further.   Any information appreciated.

One other connection:  His brother Joseph transported to Tasmania "Lady Kennaway" May 1851 for 10 years:  something of a rogue, kept on re-offending minor offences only.   Wonder if they met up?

For the moment

Too true Rosball,

My sincerest apologies......I am looking for SAMUEL Chillington in Victoria and not his brother Joseph in Tasmania.

I am getting too old for genealogy!!!!!

Hi,
There are no life events in Victoria listed under the name CHILLINGTON.

There are some in the name SHILLINGTON including these three births.  They do however seem late in life for a man arriving in  1848 ::)

Year  1885
Reg  7540

SHILLINGTON Diana

SHILLINGTON Samuel

There is this death

SHILLINGTON Saml
Father Unknown
Mother  Sarah REYNOLDS
Age 70
Death Place  Ballt
Yr 1904
Reg.   7332

The mother's surname being the same as his wife's (REYNOLDS) may indicate this man had married a close relative or there was some confusion on the part of the informant at the death registration.

Convicts sometimes changed their surname to try to hide their past, while others were illiterate so records were written however the clerl/registrar saw fit to spell them!

The death of Samuel SHILLINGTON was in 1904. Makes his birth year c1834. If it was him he did well for himself:

Samuel Shillington who died in 1904 and married Nancy Reynolds in 1882 - Reg. No 4262 is showing as having been born in Ireland.

You are able to read his Will on the PROV web site. He had a son Samuel and 4 daughters - Ada, Diana, Cora, Pearl according to his Will.  A wealthy and successful farmer with a brother called Thomas who is also mentioned in the Will.

just checked the Ballarat General Cemetery and found a burial.

CHILLINGTON SAMUEL   88   26/05/1909
   MINER

Makes him born about 1821.

I have temporarily misplaced the applicable disc, so don't know where he is showing as being born.
I am sure another rootschatter will let us know.
