Sourcing and citation of information
« on: Wednesday 18 February 15 11:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi Rootschat,

I've been left in something of a muddle about what I can post within my responses. I understood it was correct to state where you have sourced your information e.g. record collection etc. for the enquirer to source the original record for themselves. I have several years experience of copyright in academic research and the public sector so understand what I can and cannot put online but a recent incident in your Hampshire forum has left me hesitant about what I can post on this website but naturally I don't wish to be left open to accusations of breeching copyright. Is there a help section I can look in?  :-\

Kind regards

Relatively

Scroll down to the bottom of any RootsChat page, where you can find (in the dark coloured box) "Copyright".

Clicking on that will take you to the relevant section. ;D

Relatively, you sound an experienced researcher and aware of the issues that can arise. I do not know what concerns you in respect of your recent experience on Hampshire board, but if you are still not clear after reading through the link posted by KGarrad, please post more details so that you can get to the bottom of your query.

I think something everyone posting on RC needs to remember, and often not aware, is that RC is privately owned by Sarah and Trystan. Unlike other sites that have dedicated teams to check out copyrights issues (and other things!), RC doesn't, so often errs on the side of caution on issues.

However, RC tries, as much as possible, to be as open to postings as is possible  ;)

It looks as if you had content removed because the mod thought you had done a copy-and-paste from a commercial website?

It is RC policy to type out the information yourself!

That's because, generally speaking, whereas the images on the screen are copyright (to Ancestry, FindMyPast, or whoever), the data contained in them cannot be copyright ;D ::)

So, when you type it out yourself you avoid any hassle with copyright issues?!

Hi KGarrad

I had typed the information out myself. I did find information on Find My Past but had transcribed the salient details for the enquirer including the catalogue name and page numbers etc (the latter were subsequently removed by the mod). I believe my format of entry might have been mistaken as 'copied and pasted' from the mod's point of view but it is my normal way of presenting information clearly. I will be more careful in future. Thanks for responding.

One of the times when "too much information" causes a problem?! ;D ::) :-X
