Jonah Nicholson or McWhirter family

I wonder if there is anyone who can help me elaborate on the family-dates-places etc. of Jonah Nicholson and his family?
or indeed the McWhirters?

I descend from the McWhirter family and can only get back to John McWhirter who married Mary Nicholson daughter of Jonah (born 1726) and his wife Mary Carruthers.

The only leads from there are that he married Mary on the 3rd or 31st July 1756 according to Parish records
he was a Tobacconist and Admitted Burgess of Dumfries 9th January 1797

Died 01 July 1780 age 54  Dumfries?

Any help much appreciated

Chrystal, Nicholson tends to be a Skye name & Nicolson, Shetland but spelling means little really.

I have found a record on Ancestry stating that Jonah was born possibly 25 Dec at Tinwald, Dumfries-shire, Scotland not 1726 as a relation had previously found out

Parish records show his marriage to Mary Carruthers which I believe to be correct as
Marriage Date: 31 Jul 1756
Marriage Place: Dumfries,Dumfries,Scotland
Spouse:  Mary Carruthers   
FHL Film Number: 1067960

This also means his father could be
John Nicholson
Birth 1697 in  Tinwald, Dumfries-shire, Scotland 
But I have no evidence

Again, have you followed that reference to check the original? If not, do so now. You will find the original at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk or on microfilm at various libraries and family history centres.

This is all the available OPR records from 1700-1800 for Dumfries including possible variants.
There are none prior to 1700.
There is also a NAS reference to James, son of John, Merchant in Dumfries but this is 1784.

The parish record about Mary has been confirmed by a 3rd cousin of mine on a visit to Scotland.

I am not trusting the information on ancestry trees but adding it here in case it helps find any information.
Living in the South of England it is quite difficult to follow any of these records up. I have not had much success finding the information  on Scotland's people so far.

I cannot seem to firm up the records for James McWhirter born 23rd November 1801 in Dumfries to parents John McWhiter and Mary nee Nicholson married 1796 Mary's father Jonah Nicholson.
