Coley - Wednesbury Parish Church Register
« on: Tuesday 05 July 05 12:30 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone who would look at Wednesbury Parish Church Register. On the 10.10.1830 threee Coley children - Mary, William James and Benjamin were baptised. The IGI shows them as children of James & Mary Coley.

I would like to know if there is any other information shown, such as ages, occupation of father and abode.

I am really interested in tracing a James Coley (with a son Benjamin). Unable to trace said James so far, or his wife or any other information, except that on Ben's marriage cert he is shown as a boatloader (in 1863).

Cannot find any of this family, where born or anything. Can't find them on 1861 census. Felling very frustrated.  Have been looking a long time and have only just found this site-fairly new to the intricacies of "the net".

Thank you.

Hi kaycee,

The IGI shows a marriage between James COLLEY and Mary LOCKLEY on 5 Feb 1811, St Bartholemew's, Wednesbury, Staffs. Batch No. M055204.

There is also another christening for a child of James and Mary:  Hannah, on 13 FEB 1814  in St Bartholemew's.  Batch No. C055201

Hope this helps

Hello mattanderson,

Thank you for replying to my Wednesbury request. I am sorry to say that we cannot supply any other definite information on Benjamin or his father James Coley.  We only know of James because he appears on Benjamin's wedding certificate in July 1863 - where he is stated to be a Boatloader and presumably still alive.

I had very high hopes when the 1861 census was published on the nett, but I cannot find any of the Coley family, not even Benjamin and his family even though I have tried an address search - from 1871 they lived at Eagle Passage in Tipton.  They were still there on the 1891 census.

It might be something I am(or not) doing - I am not terribly computer literate (but willing to learn!!)

Thank you for your interest.

Kath

Hello PrueM

Thank you for your interest re: my Coley/Colley Wednesbury Parish Records enquiry.  We had seen the marriage of James and Mary Lockley on the IGI, though I had missed the Hannah christening. We are not sure that this is "our" James and are hesitant to "claim" him.

We only know of James because he appears on Benjamin's marriage certificate, where he is shown as a Boatloader and so presumably still alive.

I have been unable to trace any of them on the 1861 census, even though I have tried an address search as well as person search. They (Benjamin and his wife & family) were at Eagle Passage, Tipton for 30 years so we had hoped that they were there in 1861 (maybe James would be with him!!).

Thank you for your interest - I shall have to keep searching.

Kath

Hiya Kaycee

Have you tried searching for them under the Colley spelling? I'm also researching Colley's but mine are all over Tibberton, Worcester way

Hello Willow X

Thank you for your reply re: Coley/Colley. We have tried all the variations we can think of including Coallee, Coaley, etc.

We don't actually know where the family originated. Currently we are looking for James Coley who appears on his son Ben's marriage certificate in 1863. Ben (my husband's gt.grandfather says born Wednesbury on 2 censuses and Tipton on the other one we have). That is why we thought about the Ben Wednesbury Parish Register and the three children of James and Mary christened in 1830 - that name is spelt Colley if it is of any use to you.

Thank you for your reply. I'll try Tibberton again - not very far from us!

Hiya Kaycee

Any idea of when James and Ben were born? We might be able to narrow it down from that

We have absolutely no idea at all about birth of James and all we have on Benjamin is he states on his 21.7.1863 marriage certificate that he is 34, which takes us back to 1829. This is why we pounced with glee on the baptism in Wednesbury Parish Church (IGI) on 10.10.1830.

All we know of Ben's father is his (James) name on the marriage certificate. So far we have had no luck at all.

Thanks for your help.
