Birch Family Wiltshire/Kent/Surrey

I am researching the Birch line for a friend. I am trying to find information on  a James Birch otherwise known as Burge born around 1837. I have his military records but no information on his first wife, parents or siblings. He had three sons by a second marriage to Mary Ann Scott. One of them was a John James Birch (1876-1962) who had 20 children. I am also trying to confirm the names of these children. Thank you in advance for any information.

Where was James Birch born and when did he marry Mary Ann

Hi Rosie it looks like James was born in Devizes Wiltshire in 1856 in 1891 census married to Mary A 41. Correction to his age on Anc. Should be born 1836.

I assume John James first marriage was to Eliza Emma Beerling in 1903 and that she died in March qtr 1911.  John J remarried in June qtr 1911

There are two baptisms showing on the free index on FindMyPast for children of a John James & Eliza Emma Birch.

What information does James Birch marriage to Mary Ann Scott give on James and his father

The M/C is a must as in 1881 James birch is born c 1837,Havan, Berkshire.

Cant find him under Birch/Burge previous to this on Census conclusively.

Thank you all for your replies. James Birch is a widower and his father is down as John. He was born in Devizes (on his death record) but in two census records is shown as being born in Havan? Berkshire. He joined the Army at 17 in 1854 and completed 20 years service. His sons John James Birch and Charles William Birch both married women with the surname West, hence the difficulty with finding who belongs to who. John James married Ada West in 1911 his second wife.

What was James & his fathers occupation on the marriage certificate.

Do his army records give any indication where he was serving at the time of English census

OK so he was in the Army as Burge and served abroad for about 15 years

I think that going by his record this is where he was born

Thanks for your help everybody, I did not have the information about the village-i was looking for Greychevron! I don't have John Birch's(Burge) occupation but James is shown as a soldier. There is a rumour the family have Romany connections but there is no proof of this.
