1851 lookup please: SHEALS
« on: Tuesday 05 July 05 02:44 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate someone finding the family of James and Maria SHEALS ( Sheales, Shields ).  James and Maria would be about 35; James was born in Yarmouth, Norfolk, and Maria, in Bungay, Suffolk.  Emma, Caroline, and Susannah are children which should be with them.  Thanks so much,
Anne

Hi Nikkei,

Have checked the 1851 census for different variations of the spelling of your Sheals names and have not been able to find them sorry.

Thanks very much for your time. It's strange that they are not there, because they had at least one more child born there after 1851, before they left the county for North Shields, Northumberland, where they appear in 1861.

Thanks again,
Anne

Hello Laser,

Thanks for your interest.  Here is what I have for 1841 and 1861: I now realize that they WERE in Yarmouth in 1861... (realized this just moments ago when I copied these here for you ).  Would you mind giving me what you found in 1851?  Thanks so much.

Hi Nikkei,

Here they are under another variation of the name:

SHEILD Maria Head 30 Mar Mariner's wife born Bungay Suffolk
SHEILD Emma Daur 13 Yarmouth Norfolk
SHEILD John F. Son 10 Yarmouth Norfok
SHEILD Susannah Daur 7 Yarmouth Norfolk
SHEILD Caroline Daur 4 Newcastle Northumberland
SHEILD James Son 1 Yarmouth Norfolk

Row No 34
Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
HO107/1806 Folio 568 Page 18

Can I ask whether you've found them on subsequent censuses? It's after 1861 the trail goes cold for me.

Thanks very much the 1851... that's them for sure.

Yes, I have them in 71, 81, and 91.

1871:
Address: 3 Queen St., North Shields: James Sheals, head, widower, age 55, labourer, dockyard, born  Winterton, Norfolk; Frederick Sheals, son, age 12, labourer, dockyard, born Yarmouth, Norfolk; Hanna Sheals, dau., age 13, scholar, born Yarmouth, Norfolk; Hannah M. Sheals, dau., age 6, born Yarmouth, Norfolk; Robert Nessworthy, son-in-law, age 26, ship carpenter, born South Shields, Durham.  North Shields, Tynemouth, Northumberland: RG10/5119; ED 6; Fo 78; pg. 36; sched. 211.

Ancestry.com has them transcribed as GHENT... no wonder we have headaches !!!!!!

1881:  Address: 11 Potter St., Wellington Quay, Wallsend: James Shields, head, widower, age 65, gen. lab., born Norfolk; Hannah Beaty, dau., married, age 22, born Norfolk; Richard Beaty, son in law, married, age 21, gen. lab., born North Ea. Howden, Northumberland; Hannah M. Shields, granddaughter, unmarried, age 15, born Yarmouth, Norfolk.   RG11/5072, Tynemouth, Wallsend, ED 6, Fo 79, pg. 30, sched. 162.

1891: Address: Potter St., Wallsend: James Shields, head, widower, age 75, general labourer, employed, born Norfolk; Hannah M. Shields, granddaughter, single, age 26, domestic servant, employed, born Norfolk.  RG12/4222, Tynemouth, Wallsend, ED 7a, Fo 36, pg. 68, sched. 426.

Hannah M. waffles between daughter and granddaughter in these censuses, so I'm not sure what her real status is.

Who in this family are you particularly interested in?

Hi Nikkei,

I am interested in any occurrence of the name SHALE and its variants. I belong to the GOONS (Guild of One Name Studies).

I would like to continue this discussion about the Yarmouth SHEALS but have been contacted by the copyright editor of Rootschat about copying the census in messages.
If you want to contact me direct, my interest is listed on the Norfolk Surnames List http://freespace.virgin.net/isabel.easter/Norfolk/Surnames.htm
