The Knowle - possibly in Sevenoaks, Kent?
« on: Wednesday 04 February 15 14:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

During WW2 my Mum served in the Womens Land Army in Kent, and I believe was billeted at a Hostel - a large house called The Knowle. Photographs suggest it could be Victorian or Edwardian era. Does anyone have any information that would help me identify this place? A lot of her working time in the WLA was cultivating the land at the Brands Hatch circuit, which was all turned over to food production during the war years, so it would have been somewhere in that area of the county.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Almost certainly Knole, Sevenoaks which is a National Trust property.

Possibly The Knowle at Brenchley ? I haven't found a photo yet.

There was also The Knowle at Higham but I don't think that's the one.

Thanks, Shaun - the Higham one looks a definite no, as it's the wrong era, but Brenchley could be a possibility. I can't find any pics to confirm though.

Having done a Google Streetview tour along Knowle Road, I don't think it can be the one in Brenchley either.

Brenchley to Brands Hatch is about 18 miles, so perhaps not near enough.

Shaun / groom:
I think you may be right - thanks for the input. The building in my photo looks more like it would be in a developed area, rather than right out in the countryside. I wonder if it might have been a school or nursing-home, or some other functional building? Any further suggestions gratefully received.
