John Barr, Allan Barr, Alexander Barr
« on: Wednesday 04 February 15 00:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for information on a John Barr, [birth, death, marriage, parents cannot find, he had a son Alexander studied medicine at the Anderson's University, Glasgow, and the University of Glasgow from 1832-1836, Think he was born in Glasgow roundabout the 1810s. His father, John Barr, worked for James Finlay and Co.
They also hold the Will of a Alexander Barr of Fletching Sussex, as his father was a beneficiary, I have a copy of the Will, he was a Surgeon to the late 22nd L.T. Draggons who died Nov 15th 1827 aged 79yrs which gives his date of birth around 1748. The sole Trustee of his Will was his nephew John Barr. Surgeon to the Forces [1784-1832]  [think he was the son of the said John Barr but not sure, he married his cousin Margaret Barr, I have a copy of her Will, the dau of Allan Barr a Silk Manufacturer in Edinburgh, he died 1821 in Edinburgh. Trustees were John Barr, Merchant in Glasgow and a Walter Barr, I have a feeling that this Walter Barr was not a brother, but in some way was related

Three brothers;- John Barr; Alexander Barr bc1748-1827; Allan d1821, If I can find a gravestone in Edinburgh for Allan Barr it might give his age? [He married Janet Reid] Glasgow area or Lanarkshire is the area where I believe they were all born. Also cannot find a Will for the said John Barr

Hi Jon,

In order to find John's parent's you need his death cert. & hopefully his death was after 1855?

Did you find him on any census records?

You haven't mentioned his wife..................when did she die & was he still alive or predeceased?

I'm a bit confused with all the dates you have for "John Barr's"  ???

You mention "They also hold a will"...............is this James Finlay & Co?
That Alexander appears to be a brother to the John (in your 1st sentence)

I'm a bit confused with what you've written  ???  ;D  ::)

Hi Ann,
Thank you for your reply, I'm sorry my post is a bit confusing, I thought additional information on John Barr's  brothers, might help in finding  information on  John Barr  of Glasgow and who worked  for James Finlay and Co Glasgow, I didn't want anyone spending time looking for information I had already found, I don't know who his wife was. The information I posted is the only info I have on him. The Will of Alexander of Fletching held by Glasgow University is because John Barr was a brother of Alexander Barr of Fletching and a beneficiary in his will, but it is possible that John had already died and his son Alexander Barr was the beneficiary
I have search the 1841 and 1851 Census for John Barr, but didn't have much hope in finding him, as his brothers Alexander of Fletching died in 1827 and Allan Barr in 1821 at Edinburgh. And I think it most unlikely that John Barr of Glasgow survived until the 1841 Census.  His son Alexander Barr who attended Glasgow University from 1832-1836 joined the Royal Navy as an Assistant Surgeon and I have Information on his early career in Royal Navy. so its unlikely he was on any of the Census's
Thank you for your help

Jon

Sorry Jon,

Still confused ???

You say John's son is your relative ???

How do you know the said John has brother's if you don't even have the mother's name of the child of John ??? ??? ???

Surely the wife's name would appear as the mother on John's son's birth cert ???

How can you be sure of any other details without the mother's name ??? ???

Jon,

I meant to ask.......................

Have you tried:

www.familysearch.org

A search for the said brother's names, leaving parent's names blank/place of birth blank, include the years you have (from - to) & Scotland as place of birth?

You can then do a process of elimination as there are very few named Walter Barr in Scotland within the dates you have  ;D

Hi Ann
I think you must be a bit confused, as I don't think I said John's son was my relation, Anyway it doesn't matter as I've found the Will of John son Alexander Barr on the web site of the National Archives London, which I have downloaded.  Also a List of beneficiary' relating to the Will of  Alexander Barr of Fletching, deposited by a firm of Solicitors

Hi Jon & everybody,

New here, my name is Paul.

I recently recorded the headstone of John (1784-1832) & Margaret Barr in Fletching, I'm local to the area & record the information on headstones in churchyards throughout Sussex, then do a bit of research on the information, purely as a hobby.

I've uploaded the information & photo on the Find a grave website.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/281562902/john-barr

Hope this helps, I'm not sure if it's still relevant so apologies if I'm a bit late to the party.  :D

Regards

Paul
