I noticed a four year gap between births so wondered if perhaps they hadn't registered his birth in SA.

No, I didn't miss it, but the notices for Michael WALSH place him sometimes in Young Street ( no street number)  and other times another address in Parkside.

The other address is probably Marian St, which his widow was living at in 1916 when her youngest son was killed in WW1 ... I would guess that as a successful boot manufacturer Michael would have invested his profits
