G'day ... I hope someone may be able guide me in the right direction
Whilst researching the Walsh family (my partners forebears) I discovered that her grandfather and 2 of his brothers had served on the Western Front (1 being killed at Pozzieres). Off on the side of my research was an Ellen Walsh who was born in Narrabri New South Wales, a long way from my South Australian Walsh's so it took a while before I eventually decided to have a look at her. Her war service record and my further research reveals the following ...
she enlisted in the AANS 21st November 1914, aged 31
trade and calling - Nurse
she trained Perth Public Hospital (geesh!!, that's a long way from Narrabri ... how did that happen?)
she volunteered in 1914 and left for abroad in the first group of nurses and worked in hospitals and casualty clearing stations in Egypt, France and England as well as Lemnos (Lemnos being just across the water from Gallipoli and the first 'serious' major medical attention that seriously wounded soldiers would receive before being eventually evacuated to Malta)
she returned to Australia 18th February 1919
her army service record records her mother as I. ?. Walsh, 57 Young St., Parkside, South Australia (this address links her with my South Australian Walsh's, but what this link is, is evading me)
she resigned/demobilised from the military on 11th September 1919
her real name was Eleanor Loretta Walsh
sometime after she left the AANS in 1919 she married (perhaps in 1924) and her married name became Eleanor Loretta Harris (I have not been able to identify either her husband or children) however she had a daughter, miss T. Harris (as at 30th January 1968, a letter to Army records)
she died 8th December 1967 in New South Wales
on the 7th February 1968 it was decided by the authorities that she was not eligible for the special medal issued to Gallipoli Veterans
so, my question is what is the link that this Narrabri Walsh have with my South Australian Walsh's?
