Looking for William Allan Fern in France

Would like any info on William Allan fern  born Oct 1870 Rothesay.
Mr Fern left Sunderland Co Durham and headed to France after WW1 (his children now up & married) now his great grandchildren would like to know if anyone out there has some idea
where William lived and when he died. 
Any news would be welcome.     many thanks

Could be quite difficult to track (no national death index for France).

What else do you know about William - occupation, any previous connection with France?
Children grown up - was he widowed?
Does the family know why he might have gone?
