Records for Penang
« on: Monday 02 February 15 16:05 GMT (UK) »
Anyone out there able to offer advice on the following.

My great grandparents, Robert and Amelia Fiddes (nee Pickard) married in Aberdeen, Scotland in Jan 1892.
Their daughter was born in Penang Straits Settlements in October 1892, followed by two other children in later years.  By 1898, the family have returned to Aberdeen.

Do passenger lists exist for people travelling to/from Penang and how would I go about finding any information?

The fastest route was by train (and cross-channel ferry) to a Mediterranean port and then by steamer through the Suez canal, so you may not be able to trace passenger records.

There are some possibilities though:

A Mr Fiddes aged 30 arrived London from Penang on 13 July 1891 on the Ganges . However he is described as a mechanic.

A Mr and Mrs Fiddes sailed from London for Penang on 19 January 1892 on the Valetta. Ages given as 35 and 30, profession or calling "commecrcial".

A Mr R Fiddes sailed from London for Penang on 16 May 1899 on the Britannia

The Penang Daily Advertiser, for 5 October 1891 mentions that Inspector Fiddes was then on leave of absence in England. This is the "smart police officer" item that I linked on your other thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=711891

ShaunJ - you really are amazingly helpful!
Although the mechanic for profession obviously doesn't fit, the name, age and date do.  Presumably he would have been given a few months leave, so coming back to UK 6 months before his marriage would seem reasonable to me.
He married on 15 Jan 1892, so travelling back on 19 Jan fits, he would have been 31 by then and his wife was 34.
Sailing back to Penang on 16 May 1899 is also possible, his son being born in Aberdeen in October 1898.  I know his wife and family didn't return to Penang after the son's birth.
Can I ask where you found this information?
Do you know if he's likely to have signed up for a specific length of time in the police?  I wonder if he returned to Penang to complete his contract, especially since he was back here, fathered a further two children and died all within the next 5 years.

Inspector Fiddes is mentioned in the Straits Times article "The Government Gazette"  10 Nov 1893.  Last article of the item under "Horse Lottery".

Many other Fiddes articles in the items attached.
