Thomas Budgen, West Hoathly
« on: Tuesday 27 January 15 19:30 GMT (UK) »
Hello all

I'm trying to find the origin of a Thomas Budgen who married Sarah Comber in May 1706 at West Hoathly in Sussex.

Research has thrown up several potential Budgens, but no Thomas was baptised in West Hoathly that could've been him.

Two Thomas Budgens were baptised in Frant, on the Sussex/Kent border in 1679 and 1681. One died as a baby but the other has been billed as the West Hoathly Budgen in quite a few trees and research I've seen online. However, I can't find any justification for this claim.

As far as I can see, he could just as easily be a Thomas Budgen who was christened on 23 February 1676 in Horne, Surrey. His parents were Thomas and Sarah.

Or it could be a Thomas Butchin, baptised on 9 Jan 1675 at Bletchingley in Surrey, the son of John Butchin and Anne. This latter has been suggested by a Budgen family historian but again it seems conjecture.

Does anyone have any thoughts or knowledge of these connections?

Thanks so much!

Stephen

This page at British History online places Thomas Budgen MP, son of John Budgen at Bletchingley.
From work done both here and in NZ, it would appear that this Thomas Budgen was a sugar refiner in London prior to becoming an MP. Maybe through his sugar connections, he married Penelope Smith, the daughter of the Governor of Nevis, in 1727. The marriage is transcribed on Ancestry, but there's no help with 'bachelor'/'widower'.
This may help eliminate him if you know that Sarah Comber was still alive in 1727.
Research was carried out as a result of a portriat coming to light in NZ recently. Go to www.mawer.clara.net/portraits.html for the portrait and the link to NZ. Further info re TB at www.mawer.clara.net/sugarbbry.html
